A sewer lateral is the pipe that connects your home sewer line to the public sewer which is controlled by your city government. The city assumes responsibility for any problems that occurs in the city's main sewer line. Unfortunately, they do not assume responsibility for issues that may arise from the sewer lateral to your home. Needless to say this means that sewer blockage is the home owner's responsibility.

How do we know what is blocking the mainline?

In order to see exactly what the problems are the pipes must be first snaked and cleared of water. Then a specially designed camera is placed into the sewer pipes.

It is not often known if the blockage is from the city sewer line or in the resident's line. The only way to know for sure is through a camera inspection. A licensed plumber can look inside the sewer and view exactly where the blockage is and why the blockage has occurred.

How Does The Plumber Know Where The Blockage Has Occurred?
We use a machine called a locater which send a signal from the tip of the sewer camera through radio waves which allows us to find the location and the depth of the problem spot.
